Time Management
24/7
Simon Phillips' new book
takes a fresh look at Time Management to re-establish it as a
Core Skill in recognition of the fact that if you get the basics
of time management right, success in every area of your life can
be achieved more smoothly.
Here is a sample, taken from the Introduction to “Time Management
24/7”:
It is with ‘You’
that we start. In preparing this book, I have thought more about
the “Why” of time management than the “How”.
There is certainly a comprehensive list of tips and techniques to
help you throughout the book but all of these are just tinkering
if you don’t tackle the fundamental questions of “Who
You Are” (Chapter 1) and “Why You Want To Be A Better
Time Manager” (Chapter 2). To help you get to this point I
will walk you through the creation of your Life Map, constructed
from the four key areas of life – Live, Love, Learn and Leave
A Legacy. From here, we will break things down even further and
look at your Goals – how to set them and, more importantly,
a method for keeping them on track and achieving them. Then, in
‘An Introduction to Time Styles’, I will show you how
to not only understand your own approach to time management but
also a quick way to tune in to the approaches of others to the everyday
time management challenges that face us all.
The next chapter
‘Managing Yourself’ is a direct response to some of
the key issues that face people working from home or at least away
from traditional concepts of the workplace. Interestingly, most
of the challenges are not new, Daily Habits, Prioritising and Procrastination.
What is new are some of the techniques for overcoming these challenges
and an invitation to use a dynamic tool that will really double
your effectiveness - the Results Cyclone. Chapter 6, on the other
hand, is about ‘Managing Others’, especially the most
difficult person on everyone’s list - the Boss! Discover how
being able to differentiate between a Bull, an Ostrich and a Warrior
could save you hours if not days during your lifetime. Finally,
learn why saying “No” is sometimes the best thing that
you can do for others and how, by asking good questions, you can
be the most helpful person they know at the same time.
Having reassessed
the standard topics of traditional time management, the second half
of the book begins with a look at some of the new approaches (Chapter
7), tools (Chapter 8) and principles (Chapter 9) that are revolutionising
the world of personal effectiveness. In essence, this section is
a review of the “how”, “what” and “why”
of the most effective methods and techniques for maximising your
performance, and the performance of your teams, in the 21st century.
‘Managing
Life @ Digital Speed’ looks at proven strategies for tackling
the most challenging components of modern working – e-mail,
e-meetings, mobile phones, voice-mail and knowledge sharing. Whilst
‘Advanced Digital Time-ology’, looks at just some of
the ways existing technology is being used to push the boundaries
of effective time management.
By the time
you get to the Close of this book, I hope that you will be inspired
to emulate some of the behaviours of our Digital Entrepreneur or,
at the very least, recognise that ‘doubling your effectiveness’
is not about helping you get better at managing your time so that
you can “fit more in”. Our mission has always been to
help people achieve a better balance in their lives. If you apply
the ideas, techniques and principles in this book, you will certainly
be able to do more – your challenge is to go beyond this and
be a more effective person – in all the areas of your life
that you choose.
